Vayakhel

Book of Exodus

Parsha means the weekly Torah portion. Every week, Jewish communities around the world read the next section of the Torah. Here it is, made for kids.

๐Ÿ“œ The Story

'Vayakhel' means 'he gathered.' Moses gathered all the Israelites together. First he taught them about Shabbat (the Sabbath): work for six days, and rest on the seventh. On Shabbat you may not even light a fire. Shabbat is a holy day for the whole family.

Then Moses asked the people to give materials for building the Tabernacle, God's special home in the desert. Anyone who wanted to could bring gold, silver, copper, blue, purple and red wool, acacia wood, oil, spices and precious stones.

The people gave so much, and so happily, that there was more than enough! Moses had to tell them to stop bringing things. The Torah says there was 'enough for all the work, and more.'

God chose Bezalel son of Uri, from the tribe of Judah, and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, from the tribe of Dan, to be the master builders. God filled them with wisdom, understanding and knowledge, so they could make everything for the Tabernacle with great skill.

The builders made the curtains, the wooden boards, the Ark, the table, the Menorah, the golden altar and the copper altar. They also made the kiyor, a copper washbasin. It was made from copper mirrors that the women happily gave.
