Haazinu
Book of DeuteronomyParsha means the weekly Torah portion. Every week, Jewish communities around the world read the next section of the Torah. Here it is, made for kids.
๐ The Story
Haazinu is a song that Moses taught all the Jewish people shortly before he died. It begins with Moses calling to the heavens and the earth to listen. They will be his witnesses forever, because people change, but the sky and the ground stay.
In the song, Moses calls God 'the Rock.' Everything God does is perfect, fair and true. God chose the Jewish people to be His special nation, and took care of them with great love all through their years in the desert.
Moses describes God's love with a picture. God cared for the Jewish people like a mother eagle who gently stirs her nest and then carries her young ones on her wings, so they can learn to fly without falling.
The song also warns that if the people ever forget God and serve other things, hard times will come. But Moses promises that God will never leave His people completely. In the end, God always has mercy and brings comfort and redemption.
At the end of the parsha, God tells Moses to climb to the top of Mount Nebo. From there he will see the whole Land of Israel, the land he had hoped all his life to enter. Then he will die on that mountain, just as his brother Aaron died on Mount Hor.
