Matot
Book of NumbersParsha means the weekly Torah portion. Every week, Jewish communities around the world read the next section of the Torah. Here it is, made for kids.
๐ The Story
The parsha begins with the laws of vows and promises. Moses teaches the Israelites that when someone makes a promise, they must keep it. The Torah says, 'He must not break his word. He must do everything he said.' What we say matters, and our word is very important.
Then God tells Moses to go to war against Midian, because the Midianites had tried to lead Israel into worshiping idols. Moses sends twelve thousand soldiers, a thousand from each tribe. Phinehas the Kohen (priest) goes with them, carrying the holy objects. The Israelites win, and one of those defeated is the wicked Balaam, who had tried to curse Israel.
The army comes back with a lot of animals, silver and gold. Moses and Eleazar the Kohen teach the people how to make the dishes and tools they captured pure again. They also show them how to divide everything fairly: among the soldiers, the rest of the people, the Kohanim and the Levites.
At the end of the parsha, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, come to Moses. They have huge herds of sheep and cattle, and they see that the land on the east side of the Jordan River is great for grazing. They ask to live there instead of crossing into the Land of Israel.
At first Moses is upset. He thinks they want to get out of fighting along with everyone else. But they promise to build cities for their families and pens for their animals, and then go fight at the front of the army until the whole land is conquered. Only then will they go home. Moses agrees and gives them the land.
