Nitzavim
Book of DeuteronomyParsha means the weekly Torah portion. Every week, Jewish communities around the world read the next section of the Torah. Here it is, made for kids.
๐ The Story
Moses gathers all the people of Israel together, from the leaders and judges to the people who chop wood and carry water. Everyone stands together to make a covenant with God. The parsha begins, 'You are standing here today, all of you, before the Lord your God.' Young and old, men and women, everyone is there.
Then Moses says something amazing. This covenant is not only with the people standing there that day. It is also with all the generations to come, even children not yet born. Every Jew, in every time and place, is part of it.
Moses warns the people not to worship idols, and to keep the Torah with all their heart. He says, 'The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and our children forever.' What only God knows is up to God. What we do know is our job to keep.
Then Moses talks about teshuvah, returning to God. Even if the people leave the Torah's path and are sent away from their land, they can always come back with a whole heart. God will welcome them with love and bring them home to the Land of Israel.
The parsha ends with a message of hope. The Torah is not far away, up in the sky or across the sea. It is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, so you can do it. Moses puts a choice in front of the people, life and good, or death and evil, and tells them, 'Choose life.'
