📜 The Story
The parsha picks up right where the last one ended. Phinehas, the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the Kohen (priest), acted bravely for God and stopped a terrible plague, saving many lives.
God tells Moses that He is giving Phinehas a 'covenant of peace.' Phinehas and his children after him would be Kohanim (priests) forever. This was his reward for the courage he showed in stopping the plague.
Then God tells Moses to count the whole nation again, tribe by tribe. They were getting ready to enter the Land of Israel and divide it fairly among the families.
The five daughters of Zelophehad, Mahlah, Noa, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, bravely come to Moses. Their father died without sons, and they ask to receive his share of the land. Moses asks God, and God answers, 'The daughters of Zelophehad are right.' This is where the Torah teaches that daughters can inherit land.
God tells Moses to climb a mountain and look out over the Land of Israel, because he will die soon. Moses places his hands on Joshua son of Nun and makes him the next leader. The parsha ends with the list of offerings: the daily offering, called the Tamid, and the extra offerings for Shabbat (the Sabbath), Rosh Chodesh (the new month) and every holiday.

- God gave Phinehas a 'covenant of peace,' and promised that the priesthood would stay in his family forever.
- The daughters of Zelophehad, Mahlah, Noa, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, are the first in the Torah to be given the right to inherit land.
- The count in this parsha, the second big count in the desert, came to 601,730 men, taken just before entering the Land.
- Joshua son of Nun is made the next leader of Israel here, when Moses places his hands on him.
- The parsha lists the daily Tamid offering and the extra Musaf offerings for Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh and every holiday.
