Nasso

Book of Numbers

Parsha means the weekly Torah portion. Every week, Jewish communities around the world read the next section of the Torah. Here it is, made for kids.

๐Ÿ“œ The Story

Nasso is the longest parsha in the Torah, with 176 verses. It goes on with the count of the Levites. Each family, the sons of Gershon, Kohath and Merari, had its own job carrying parts of the Tabernacle from place to place.

The parsha also has important laws. For example, someone who stole something and wants to make it right must give it back and add one fifth more. The Torah teaches us how important it is to fix our mistakes and be honest.

Another part of the parsha teaches about the nazir. A nazir is someone who chooses, for a period of time, to be extra holy. A nazir does not drink wine, does not cut his hair, and does not go near the dead.

The parsha also has the Priestly Blessing, one of the most famous blessings of all: 'May God bless you and protect you. May God shine His face on you and be kind to you. May God turn His face toward you and give you peace.' The Kohanim (the priests) still bless the Jewish people with these words today.

At the end, the parsha describes how the Tabernacle was dedicated. For twelve days, a leader from a different tribe brought an offering each day, and every offering was exactly the same. The Torah lists each one separately, to honor every tribe on its own.
